A controlled burn in the Curtis Prairie on the UW Arboretum in Madison, WI. Controlled burns are used as management tool for prairies.
]Some of the benefits of controlled burns include:Some specific advantages of prescribed burns include:
1) stimulating prairie grass growth and improve habitat for upland game and waterfowl.
2) creating pockets of open water for waterfowl amidst cattails proliferating in low areas;
3) stimulates the growth of wildflowers, which attract insects—a vital food sources for young game and non-game grassland birds;
4) improving cover type for grassland nesting birds such as pheasants, and spur native vegetative growth for songbirds; and
5) creating open pockets of bare ground, increasing diversity and richness of ground foraging, seed-eating small mammals and birds.
I am a nature and landscape photographer based in Madison, WI, with images from around the world. I am originally from Australia, but have lived in New Brunswick, Canada, and Socorro, New Mexico, before moving to Madison. I am trained as a geologist, and still teach introductory geology classes (need to pay the bills somehow).. The love of the outdoors has strongly influenced my photography, initially in Australia, but then in the the NW Territories of Canada (I was there doing geology), and the desert of New Mexico. Now I find the beauty around where I live in Madison. If you live in the Madison area, contact me, and I can print images for you (save on postage).
