This structure on the grounds of Camp Randall, Univeristy of Wisconsin, Madison,Wisconsin is often mistakenly referred to as a civil war stockade. However research by Daniel Epstein revealed it's true history - this is copied from an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (June 27, 2012).
"At the end of the Civil War, the wood buildings at Camp Randall were sold as surplus government property. One of the 40-foot-long camp guard houses was purchased by a Madison man who hauled it to his home on Johnson St., reassembled it and used it as a corn crib. When the man died, his friends remembered it had once been part of Camp Randall and they offered to return it. No one is sure when that happened but it was probably between 1914 and 1936. It was either too big or dilapidated so it was chopped into smaller pieces and assembled at its current location. That's why there are no doors and the gable roof is constructed of thin boards.

I am a nature and landscape photographer based in Madison, WI, with images from around the world. I am originally from Australia, but have lived in New Brunswick, Canada, and Socorro, New Mexico, before moving to Madison. I am trained as a geologist, and still teach introductory geology classes (need to pay the bills somehow).. The love of the outdoors has strongly influenced my photography, initially in Australia, but then in the the NW Territories of Canada (I was there doing geology), and the desert of New Mexico. Now I find the beauty around where I live in Madison. If you live in the Madison area, contact me, and I can print images for you (save on postage).
