A hoodoo in the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, west of the Rio Grande between Albuquerque and Santa Fe in New Mexico. The wall is composed of volcaniclastic sediments resulting form the eruption in Jemez Volcanic field about 6-7 million years ago. Hoodoos (also known as tent rocks) are characterized by having a very resistant cap rock at the top. This cap rock protects the pillar from being eroded away.
I am a nature and landscape photographer based in Madison, WI, with images from around the world. I am originally from Australia, but have lived in New Brunswick, Canada, and Socorro, New Mexico, before moving to Madison. I am trained as a geologist, and still teach introductory geology classes (need to pay the bills somehow).. The love of the outdoors has strongly influenced my photography, initially in Australia, but then in the the NW Territories of Canada (I was there doing geology), and the desert of New Mexico. Now I find the beauty around where I live in Madison. If you live in the Madison area, contact me, and I can print images for you (save on postage).
